An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS. The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who need to file a U.S. tax return but don’t qualify for a Social Security Number (SSN).

There are many reasons
you might need an ITIN

Obtaining an ITIN helps eligible Canadians receive certain U.S. payments and comply with U.S. tax laws. This includes individuals:

  • who need to file a U.S. tax return but are not eligible to receive a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN).
  • who are partners in a U.S. partnership conducting business in the United States.
  • who are receiving rental income from U.S. real property during the current tax year.
  • who are resident aliens for U.S. tax purposes and have opened a U.S. interest bearing bank deposit account.
  • who are U.S. non residents, but disposed of U.S. real property interest during the current tax year.
  • who are receiving U.S. pension distributions during the current tax year.
  • who have opened an interest bearing deposit account that generates income effectively connected with a U.S. trade or business.
  • who need to file a tax return because of the time they have lived in the U.S., add a spouse or dependent on a U.S. tax return, or completing Form 8288-A or Form 8288-B withholding requirements related to the sale of U.S. property.

Timeframe expectations

The timeframe for receiving your ITIN can vary depending on when the application is submitted. If an application is submitted during the IRS' peak processing times (closer to U.S. individual tax filing deadlines), it will likely take 7-12 weeks to receive your ITIN. Processing times during the off-peak season are generally closer to 6 to 8 weeks.

As your CAA, we strive to ensure that your application process is as swift and smooth as possible.
